When Christa Landon presented the first printed version of her edition of Joseph Haydn‘s piano sonatas, Haydn‘s sonata oeuvre was still overshadowed by the works of Mozart and Beethoven. Since then, Haydn‘s sonatas have progressed from lesson rooms to concert halls, and Landon‘s edition has played a crucial role in that process. Since the Haydn anniversary in 2009, this legendary edition has been thoroughly revised, taking into account new sources, the resolution of questions of authenticity, and the fact that editorial principles for 18th century music have changed in the past 40 years. The new edition is published in four volumes, the content of each volume being compatible with the volumes of the previous edition. Volume 3 of the new edition comprises the 17 sonatas Hob. XVI:21–32 and Hob. XVI:35–39 contained in Vol. 2 of the previous Wiener Urtext edition, including popular works for music lessons such as Hob. XVI:27, 35 and 37. In the Notes on Interpretation, Robert D. Levin explains important aspects of Haydn‘s performance practice and, with the help of numerous examples, shows possibilities to embellish the pauses frequently used by Haydn.
The Haydn 200th anniversary in 2009 was a welcome occasion to thoroughly revise this legendary edition, since new sources have been discovered since its original printing forty years ago. Questions concerning authenticity have been clarified, and the editorial principles for 18th-century music in particular have markedly changed in the meantime. The new edition, too, is divided into four volumes, the content of which is compatible with that of each of the volumes of the preceding edition. Plus, it contains the recently discovered “Bolzano Sonata.” Volume 4 of the present new edition contains the complete works published in volume 3 of the former Wiener Urtext edition. In the notes on interpretation, Robert D. Levin explains essential aspects of Haydn’s performance practice. For advanced players.
Haydn’s famous sonata, written for longtime friend Marianne von Genzinger, is available here in Urtext and facsimile formats. Its score is based on the new edition of Haydn’s piano sonatas as revised by Ulrich Leisinger. Textual problems have been solved due to the evaluation of a newly discovered manuscript copy, and this edition also includes a preface with information about the genesis of the work. For advanced players.

Haydn's last piano work is also considered to be his most famous single work for this instrument. The minor theme is filled with emotional depth: “a melancholy andante in F minor, with variations, as only a genius can do them, that almost sounds like a free fantasia” (thus described in a review of the time). The form is also demanding: not merely one theme but two – one in a major key, the other in a minor one – are varied in turn. The autograph gives one to believe that the work was originally intended to be the first movement of a sonata. This single edition has been taken from the recently revised volume of “Piano pieces” (HN 224) and furnished with a detailed commentary. Henle also recently published a facsimile of Haydn's autograph of the Variations in f minor: HN 3218.

These early keyboard works by Haydn were originally called Divertimentos or Sonatas, but because of their form and brevity were later renamed. Containing two to four movements each, they include much that is the essence of the Haydn style. The "Sonatina in G Major," Hob. XVI/8 is perhaps the best known of the set, yet all are worthy of study as preparation for Mozart and Haydn sonatas.

These three volumes, in practical urtext-pedagogical editions, are designed with the idea that these precious works will be performed on the modern piano. With respect to the original text, Dr. Hinson offers many valuable, stylistically faithful suggestions for interpretation. Volume I is appropriate for progressing intermediate students, and provides a most effective introduction to the great Viennese Classical style. The comb binding creates a lay-flat book that is perfect for study and performance.
